Gizmos
I spent the later part of Monday evening with Alex Layton, helping him make "gizmos". Gizmos first originated at Noreascon 3, and we decided to do them again for 4. They are litttle tags that can be attached to a badge to identify the area that a person is working in. We make them by cutting narrow rectangles from thin plastic report covers, and then sticking labels to them. It's a lot of repetitive work, but doesn't take all that long to do.
The clubhouse was a lot of fun this evening, with people pouring in from all over the country and beyond to help out with the truck loading. It's really starting to feel like a convention! I'm really looking forward to moving into the hotel tomorrow.

I have a question. By the time this is all over, I'll have worked in 3 depts. What do I get on my badge (besides a largre SUCKER!) I'm working in programming mostly, but I did a big job for pubs as well, and I'll be a Hugo escort for Events.

The purpose of gizmos is not to recognize people for every area they ever worked in, but simply to identify people with at-con responsibilities, so that you'll know who you can talk to about a particular activity. So none of the pre-con areas are included in the gizmos. For programming, Program Ops, Green Room, and some of the specialized program areas that are operating at-con are included, but none of the pre-con "think tank" areas. Similarly, for pubs, newsletter is included, but not progress reports or program book. Hugo escorts might get a Hugo Ceremony one; I'm not sure. The gizmos will be distributed via the division/area heads to the people working at con. So youre area head will tell you which (if any) you should wear. (In addition to gizmos, which identify the area, there will be staff and committee ribbons to identify people's levels. So people who did pre-con staff work will get the appropriate ribbon, just not a gizmo.)

That's not "gizmos", the plural is "gizmi".
Hugs to Alex.
