Boston for Orlando in 2001 is delighted to announce the winner of our "name that con" contest, tell you how you can get in touch with us, and tell you about a much (much) crueler contest at this year's Worldcon.

Richard Lynch, of Maryland, USA, first proposed that our group adopt Magicon 2 as the official name of the 59th World Science Fiction Convention. F.A.N.A.C., Inc. agreed to allow us to honor MagiCon, the 1992 Worldcon, by granting us the right to use the service-marked name of Magicon 2.

As the first "suggester" of our new name, Richard Lynch will receive a full, attending membership in Magicon 2 if we are chosen as the site for the 2001 Worldcon. Runners-up in the contest included Art Henderson of Virginia, Carlos Perez of Florida, and Alex Lucyshyn of Georgia, and each is eligible to select a new pet from our amazing collection of fantastic flamingos of fandom. (Please note that we quickly quashed one committee member's notion that the first runner-up got one flamingo, the second runner-up got two flamingos, etc., because it would violate the Geneva Convention.)

F.A.N.A.C., Florida Association for Nucleation And Conventions, Inc. was the sponsoring group for the 50th World Science Fiction Convention (MagiCon), and now continues its service to the fannish community through the FANAC FanHistory Archives and project.

For more information about Magicon 2's bid, committee and history, please see our Web site at http://www.noreascon.org/b2001. The FANAC FanHistory Archives Web site is located at http://www.fanac.org.

The Magicon 2: Boston for Orlando in 2001 bid will be sponsoring parties at Bucconeer, this year's Worldcon in Baltimore, MD, on Wednesday, August 5 ("Flamingo Follies") and Thursday, August 6 ("The Dark Side of the Flamingo"), as well as our giant flamingo fest on Saturday, August 8 ("Take Our Flamingos - PLEASE"). We will also have a bid table at Bucconeer to answer questions people may have about our bid.

Finally, we are (dubiously) pleased to present a contest to "Share the Wealth, Share the Fun." Magicon 2 wants you. And your flamingos.

Have you always lived in shame because of the yard flamingo you keep in back of your house where the neighbors might not see it? Do you quickly hide your flamingo candle sticks when your tres chic society friends come to visit? Do you shudder with trepidation when that tee-shirt proudly sporting a flamingo in a propeller beanie is the last piece of clean clothing in the house? Does a party at your house mean you replace those fiery-pink-avian-laden sheets, towels and shower curtains with mundane muslin and white?

Fear not! You're not alone! We're worse, and we want to help.

During Bucconeer, the 56th World Science Fiction Convention, Magicon 2 will host the great flamingo round-up. Flock-up. Whatever.

Bring your flamingernalia; invite your inanimate pink buddies to share your airline berth; lovingly wrap those statuettes, salt and pepper shakers, soap dishes, tubular steel lawn ornaments, tuck them in your suitcase, and smile a secret smile when you board the plane.

Do you think your flamingo is the tackiest, sveltist, most fannish? If we agree and win our bid for Orlando in 2001, you (and your flamingo buddie) will receive a full, attending membership to the 2001 Worldcon. We'll only ask that you drop off your flamingo (with a label bearing your name and the flamingo's name) at our bid table and let us display it at our bid parties.

We'll give it back. In fact, we rather insist on that.

Are there rules? Well, yes. No live ones, please. (No previously living ones, either -- even stuffed.) Don't make one out of pink marshmallow fluff unless you're prepared to watch it get eaten. Any additional rules and information can be found at the Fantastic Flamingos of Fandom World-Wide Web Site (http://www.noreascon.org/b2001). [spinning flamingo]
